Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is an advanced type of external beam radiation—a treatment option that uses high-energy rays to cure cancer .
A tumor is a complex, three-dimensional object. IMRT conforms to the shape of a tumor, and has the ability to allow your doctors to safely deliver a higher dose of radiation to the tumor. For several types of cancer, that means a higher cure rate.
IMRT is an excellent option for many patients because it:
- Spares the healthy cells surrounding the tumor
- Has potentially fewer side effects than conventional radiotherapy techniques
- Offers fast treatments
- Does not cause you to become radioactive; it is safe for family and friends to be near you
Along with IMRT, your radiation oncologists may use Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) to ensure that the radiation is precisely on target for each of your sessions.
At Cancer Care of Western New York, we treat more patients with IMRT and IGRT on a daily basis than many large university centers and cancer centers.
